This course is intended both for students who are interested in a general overview of intellectual property and as a gateway to Boalt's Law and Technology program. The course begins with an analysis of the competing policies underlying the intellectual property laws. It covers patent and copyright law. No technical background is expected or required. The textbook for the course will be Merges, Menell & Lemley, Intellectual Property in the New Technological Age (4th rev. ed. Aspen 2007).

I am Menell's class right now (Spring 2008) and I love it. He is really entertaining and the only class that I would consider attending at 8:30 in the morning. His lectures are pretty clear and he is really good at integrating multimedia into his explanations. That said, he gets behind very easily, is prone to a few random (but often hilarious) tangents, and can speed through some pretty important material. I would not rely solely on his slides or your class notes. Although, I usually do the reading after attending class because he does a good job of going over what you really need to know. Keep in mind that in addition to class three times a week, there is an ASP session, which is helpful because you go over practice problems that prepare you for the exam. But, it's at the same time as the class. I'm not sure if this course is always offered at 8:30 a.m., but having class four days a week at this time is something to keep in mind.
