This course will survey the international legal system for intellectual property. That system includes the World Trade Organization’s TRIPS agreement, WIPO agreements such as the Patent Cooperation Treaty, and bilateral and regional free trade agreements. The course will provide a practical and theoretical overview of this area of law, and situate this area of law within debates over the nature of international law and the emergence of a global “information society.” It will also address several topics of contemporary interest, such as access to medicines, copyright piracy, enforcement, agriculture and genetic engineering, and traditional knowledge.
